On the occasion, Mr. Raghavendra hailed the contribution of the Sankara Eye Hospital in serving poor patients with eye-related problems free of cost. He announced grant of Rs. 10 lakh to the hospital under the Member of Parliament Local Area Development Division scheme (MPLADs). The fund would be utilised for the purchase of a bus that would be used for shifting patients to and from hospital for treatment.
He said it was heartening to note that the Sankara Eye Hospital had installed the latest equipment which would help perform eye surgeries on patients without causing much pain. He said providing treatment to poor patients free of cost was a ‘sacred’ service.
An observation
Mr. Raghavendra commented that whatever the Government was providing by way of health services was inadequate. Expressing his satisfaction over the emergence of Shimoga city as the haven of the modern health services, he said there was scope for the expansion of the services in the health sector for the benefit of the poor people.
According to him, Shimoga district was poised to emerge as the model district with several development works being implemented at the instance of Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa. He said that the Railways was providing better services in the district. While Rs. 1,000 crore was being spent to improve railway services across the State, the Government was spending Rs. 1,000 crore only on the work on gauge conversion between Shimoga and Talaguppa.
Survey for the new railway line between Shimoga and Harihar was under way and if the new rail link was created, it would provide a direct link from Shimoga to the metros like Mumbai and other places, Mr. Raghavendra added. He announced that the work on the laying of the four-lane express highway was going on at a cost of Rs. 800 crore.
Addressing the gathering, Mr. Janardhana Swamy stressed on the need to bring in a change in the education system so as to make it more meaningful.
He explained as to how important it was to help honest and committed people enter politics so as to eliminate corruption in governance.
He also announced the sanction of Rs. 10 lakh out of the MPLADs to the hospital for the purchase of a bus exclusively for the Chitradurga district.
Chief Medical Officer Ravi Shankar explained the features of the new equipment installed at the hospital. According to him, the facility would be made available for the benefit of the people of the rural areas in due course of time.
